Infected Nonunion: Humerus

Presenting

X-rays of a 50 year old woman with an infected humeral nonunion 12 months after a fracture that was initially treated at an outside facility by other physicians using plates and screws. The patient had undergone two surgeries before being referred to us and had very limited elbow motion, severe pain, and difficulty doing her daily activities.

Treatment in Progress

These x-rays during treatment after removal of infected bone show Ilizarov compression and a bone graft in the intramedullary canal at the nonunion site.

Result After Treatment by Dr. Brinker

The final x-rays after treatment show solid healing of the bone. The patient had good motion at the shoulder and elbow, no evidence of infection, and dramatically improved function.
